Stony Brook Announces July Programs

Contributed to The Norfolk Boomerang

Summer fun begins now at Stony Brook! Join us for these programs:

Turtle Trekkers:
Saturday, July 17th,
from 10:30-12:00pm.
Start your weekend off right with a fun and knowledgeable Stony Brook teacher on the trails learning about nature. There will be crafts, activities and lots of laughter. So come and join the fun. This month’s theme: Our Web-footed Friends! Ages 2.9 to 6 with a parent.

Fee: $10m/$12nm per child
Horse-stingers, Darning
Needles & Serpent Doctors:
Sunday, July 18th,
from 1:00-3:00pm.
Actually they don’t sting, they don’t sew, and they don’t doctor, but they’re awfully cool. Spend an afternoon in search of Stony Brook’s fabulous dragonflies such as the Halloween pennant, violet dancer, slaty skimmer, and ruby meadowhawk. Note: Each parent/child pair will receive a Mass Audubon laminated “Guide to Northeastern Dragonflies & Damselflies.”

Fee: $15m/$18nm per person
Dragonflies & Damselflies
of Stony Brook:
Sunday, July 18th,
from 9:30am-12:30pm.
When the birding is slow, challenge yourself with some of the most spectacular insect species to inhabit our wetlands, the odonates. These beautiful jewels can be important indicators of habitat quality, as well as a lot of fun to identify. Massachusetts is home to 166 recorded species! Join Robert Buchsbaum, the Mass Audubon Regional Scientist overseeing the ecological management of Stony Brook, as we catch and take a closer look at these remarkable creatures.

Fee: $18m/$23nm per person
Family Ponding:
Sunday, July 25th,
from 2:00-4:00pm. Discover what lives in the ponds and wetlands of Stony Brook. We will use nets to search for creatures living in the water and mud. Afterwards we will look for and discuss the larger animals that spend time in the ponds and marshes of the Sanctuary.

Fee: $6m/$8nm per person

Pre-registration is required for all programs. For more details, visit the Mass Audubon webpage at www.massaudubon. org or contact us at 508-528-3140. Register by phone, email (stonybrook@massaudubon.org), fax (508-553-3864) or in person. Stony Brook is located at 108 North Street in Norfolk.
