Norfolk Firefighters Respond to Several Emergency Calls on July 4th

Norfolk’s firefighters spent the 4th of July handling a number of emergency calls, which included assistance to Walpole for about three hours covering their station to a boat fire on Population Pond. The responses were:

Rescue 1 transported a patient BLS to Caritas/Norwood Hospital
5:21pm - Mutual Aid to Walpole, Engine 2 covered the Walpole
Norfolk Firefighter/Paramedic Charlottte Giovanella (atop ladder truck) operates Ladder 1 at an oil burner problem on Worcester Road on Thursday, July 8 after 5 p.m. Members from Wrentham Engine 1 stand by to assist. The report of smoke in the home brought the automatic response of Wrentham engine company to back up Norfolk’s Engine 2, staffed by on-duty members. Fire Station with the on-duty shift. 5:4 4pm - Medway Street, gas grille fire, Tank 1 responded with DC Wood and one member. Fire out on arrival
7:05pm - Holbrook Street, reported smoke in the area, Engine 1 responded with DC Wood and two members
7:15 pm - Longmeadow Road, R1 and DC Wood responded to a medical call, Rescue 1 transported ALS to Caritas/Norwood Hospital with a Wrentham Firefighter/Paramedic on mutual aid
Norfolk’s Squad 1 (foreground) and Tank 1 (right) support Franklin’s Engine 1 at a woods fire in Franklin on Populatic Road on Tuesday, July 6 around 3 p.m. The on-duty shift responded with Chief Coleman Bushnell and Deputy Chief Stephen Wood and Sqaud 4. Norfolk’s Tank 1 supplied over 3,000 gallons of water to the fire units on the scene. Norfolk’s station was covered by two members, who were called to a medical situation on North Street and transported the patient to Caritas/Norwood Hospital. The Millis Fire Department was then requested to cover the Norfolk station, and Millis handled a fire alarm on Pond Street. Overall, Norfolk responded to seven emergency calls on Tuesday. 8:01pm - Public Safety Complex, medical, Wrentham requested mutual aid for a Rescue, canceled as a Norfolk firefighter/paramedic responded on the recall to evaluate the patient, who refused medical treatment/transport
9:44pm - Old Populatic Road, reported boat fire. Engine 2 responded with DC Wood. Upon arrival found the fireextinguished
10:02pm - MCI-Norfok medical, Rescue 1 transported to Caritas/Norwood Hospital BLS after the patient was evaluated by firefighter/paramedics
10:06pm - Public Safety Complex, medical, patient transported ALS by Rescue 2 to Caritas/Norwood Hospital by recalled members .
On July 5, the Fire Department responded to an additional seven emergencie,s including a reported drowning and two fires as listed:
1:35 am - Mutual Aid to Wrentham, Public Safety Complex.
Rescue 1 evaluated a patient and obtained a refusal for treatment/ transport
11:36 am - Grey Birch Road, mulch firereported to be endangering a condominium. Full recall for off-duty career and call staff, Engine 2 & Squad 1 responded. Minor damage to the condominium siding
1:50pm - Norfolk Arena, medical, Rescue 1 & Squad 1 responded. Patient refused treatment/transport
2:14 pm - Bay State Corrections, smoke detector activated, full recall of off-duty career and call staff, Engine 1 and Ladder 1 responded with Chief Bushnell
6:36 pm - Medway Street, fallen tree blocking street, on-duty shift responded with Engine 2, cleared roadway with Police
9:12 pm - Crossbow Lane, brush fire. Full recall of off duty career and call staff responded with Tank 1, Squad 1 & Squad 4 with Chief Bushnell. Firefightersused 1,000 gals of water from T1 to extinguish a firestarted by discarded grille coals
9:17pm - Harlow Avenue, reported drowning. Norfolk Police and Fire units responded to 911 reports of a possible drowning.
The on-duty shift responded with Rescue 1, firefighter/paramedics dressing in water rescue suits while responding. Upon arrival Police found a male and female on shore near a private dock, the female in distress gasping for air and an overturned canoe about 75’ from the shore. The incident became a police matter withthe male taken into custody. The female was transported BLS to Caritas/Norwood Hospital after being evaluated by firefighter/paramedics. Engine 1 and Squad 1 towing Marine 1, launched Marine 1 from the River Road boat launch to retrieve an over turned canoe, which was returned to the boat launch. Chief Bushnell was the incident commander, with Medway Fire responding on automatic mutual aid, cancelled enroute.
