Not Drunk, Just Test Me

A Norfolk resident went to the police station last month with an unusual demand: Give me a Breathalyzer. The 57-year-old man told police his car wouldn’t start after he blew into an ignition lock on his car designed to keep him from driving when he is intoxicated.

Such alcohol-sensitive ignition locks are usually included in a sentence for people who are convicted of drunken driving multiple times.

But the man told police he hadn’t been drinking, and a manual Breathalyzer at about 12:12 p.m. May 15 showed he had no alcohol in his system, said Norfolk Police Lieutenant Jon Carroll. The man needed the proof from police so he could get the ignition lock on his car fixed, Carroll said.
