Stony Brook Announces June Programs

Contributed to The Norfolk Boomerang
Summer fun begins now at Stony Brook! Join us for these programs:

Stony Brook after Hours: Friday, June 11th, from 7:30-10:00pm. Come to Stony Brook at a magical time of day. Enjoy the solitude of the evening while learning about nocturnal animals. Walk the trails with an ear tuned to the sounds of the woods and wetlands. While we look for bats as they hunt for insects over the ponds, Perhaps we’ll hear an owl, or maybe we’ll just have a quiet stroll along the trails. These hikes are ideal for families who want to spend some time together in a non-traditional way. Fee: $6m/$8nm

Birding the Rhode Island Coastal Combo: Sunday, June 12th, from 7:00am-3:00pm. This day trip features stops at two coastal, National Wildlife Refuges. Ninigret NWR, a former air base, offers great birding, especially on old runways recently restored to shrub habitat. Trustom Pond NWR is the second great stop, where waterfowl are diverse and abundant. Fee: $75m/$85nm per person

Turtle Trekkers: Saturday, June 19th, from 10:30-12:00pm. Start your weekend off right with a fun and knowledgeable Stony Brook teacher on the trails learning about nature. There will be crafts, activities and lots of laughter. So come and join the fun. This month’s theme: Turtle Time! Ages 2.9 to 6 with a parent. Fee: $10m/$12nm per child

Tree and Shrub ID Workshop: Sunday, June 20th, from 1:00-4:00pm. Learn how to use the Peterson Guide to Trees and Shrubs to identify the trees and shrubs that commonly grow in our area. During this class we will discuss the characteristics that can be used to identify these species and practice using those traits to improve our identificationskills.
