Smulowitz Beats Harkins In Democratic State Senate Primary

Political newcomer Peter Smulowitz upset longtime state Representative Lida Harkins in the Democratic primary for state Senate this past Tuesday, earning the chance to meet Republican state representative Richard Ross in the general election Tuesday, May 11.

Smulowitz, an emergency room physician in Boston and a Needham resident, also beat Harkins (also of Needham) in Norfolk, 148-93, with one blank. Ross, who was unopposed in the Republican primary, got 146 votes in Norfolk, with 5 write-ins and 1 blank, according to the Norfolk Town Clerk’s office.

Ross, of Wrentham, represents Norfolk in the state Legislature.

The winner will replace former state senator Scott Brown, who resigned from the state Legislature after being elected United States senator earlier this year.
