Philip Joseph Lockwood Jr., 73
Philip Joseph Lockwood Jr., 73, of Maple Street in Norfolk died Monday evening, February 22, 2010 at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro following a period of declining health. He was born January 13, 1937 in Lincoln, Rhode Island, son of the late Philip J. Lockwood Sr. and Kathryn (Gaynor) Lockwood. He was raised and educated in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. He graduated from the former Pawtucket East High School in 1954. Mr. Lockwood proudly served as a member of the United States Navy Reserves. He moved to Norfolk in 2004 from Lucien Drive in South Attleboro, where he had lived since 2000. Before moving to South Attleboro, Mr. Lockwood was a resident of Steere Street in Attleboro from 1977 to 2000. He had lived in New Jersey from 1972 to 1977 and in Seekonk from 1959 to 1972. Mr. Lockwood worked as a transportation manager in the trucking industry for many years before retiring in 2001.
He worked for numerous companies during his career, including Franklin Environmental Services and St. Johnsbury Trucking Company Inc..
Since moving to Norfolk, he was a communicant of St. Jude Church. He was a former longtime communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Seekonk, where he served as a Eucharistic
minister, lecturer, and Confraternity of Christian Doctrine teacher. He was a longtime volunteer at the National Shrine of Our Lady of La Salette in Attleboro. Mr. Lockwood was active in the Family Retreat program from 1964 to 1972, where he assisted with the children’s program and assisted the counselors. A man of strong religious convictions, Mr. Lockwood was an active volunteer in Marriage Encounter in Massachusetts and New Jersey.
In earlier years, he served as an assistant Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America when his boys were young.
He and his wife enjoyed square dancing. Mr. Lockwood enjoyed creating poetry. He was the husband of Claire Y. (Bessette) Lockwood whom he married on May 21, 1955.
In addition to his wife of almost 55 years, he leaves seven children: Denise C. Lockwood of Melbourne, Florida and her twin brother, Dennis P. Lockwood of Millington, New Jersey; Daniel M. Lockwood of Hillside, New Jersey; Doreen K. Bailey of Attleboro; David G. Lockwood of Truckee, California; Diane M. Miller of Norfolk; and Douglas A. Lockwood of Sandy, Utah.He leaves 13 grandchildren; a brother, Gregory Lockwood of Easton; and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Anthony Lockwood. He was eagerly expecting the arrival of his first great-grandchild in July. A wake is scheduled for 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, February 26, 2010 at the Commonwealth Chapel of Dyer-Lake Funeral Home — the national historic Colonel Obed Robinson Home at 161 Commonwealth Avenue (exit 5 off Interstate 95 North or South, go right at end of ramp, 1/2 mile on the left), Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleborough. A children’s room is available during the wake and the funeral.
A funeral is scheduled to begin at 7:45 a.m. Saturday, February 27 at the funeral home’s Commonwealth Chapel, followed by a 9 a.m. funeral Mass at St. Mary Roman Catholic Church at 385 Central Street in Seekonk.Burial at St. Stephen’s Cemetery in Attleboro is private. Following church services, family and friends will be welcomed to join the family for a time of continued fellowship and refreshments at a location to be announced. Please do not send flowers. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Dyer-Lake Charitable Foundation Inc., a registered 501 (c) (3) organization, 161 Commonwealth Avenue, North Attleboro, Mass. 02760 to benefit the National Shrine of Our Lady of La Salette in Attleboro.
