Police: Driver Who Hit Tree Was High On Drugs

Police have charged a 31-year-old Norfolk man who crashed a Jeep into a tree on Medway Street last week with operating under the influence of drugs, police said. Police found eight needles in the blue 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee,

including six in the center console, one under the left rear passenger seat, and one between the driver’s seat and the center console that had obviously been used, said Norfolk Police Lieutenant Jon Carroll. Police did not find drugs in the vehicle, but the driver appeared to be under the influence of narcotics and the paraphernalia was consistent with heroin use, Carroll said. Police got a 911 call reporting the accident at 9:51 p.m. Thursday, February 18. Police found the Jeep facing northbound but wide of the southbound lane on Medway Street, meaning the vehicle had crossed the road before hitting the tree, Carroll said. The driver was taken while under arrest to Norwood Hospital, where he was treated and released into police custody. The vehicle sustained heavy front-end damage. The driver was charged with operating under the influence of drugs and reckless operation of a motor vehicle. He was also cited for a marked lanes violation and for operating an unregistered motor vehicle.
