Burke Running For Board of Health

Thomas Burke has taken out nomination papers to run for the town’s Board of Health. Burke is finishing his second three-year term on the Planning Board. As things stand now, Burke may be performing a switch with Board of Health chairman Jeff Palumbo, who is running for Planning Board. Just such a switch took place last year, when Peter Chipman left the Board of Health for the Planning Board, being replaced on the Board of Health by Mike Findlen, who had been a member of the Planning Board. But another candidate, Mark Flaherty, has also taken out papers

to run for the one available three-year term on the Board of Health.

Two three-year terms are available on the Planning Board. The other seat that is expiring is held by David Roche, the current board chairman. Burke was the only candidate to take out nomination papers during the past week in this election cycle, which jumped out to a quick start but has since slowed to a crawl.

In other races, only one candidate has so far taken out papers to run for Norfolk School Committee. Shawn Dooley has taken out nomination papers to run for a three-year term on the Norfolk School Committee, which oversees the town’s elementary schools. A one-year term on the School Committee is also available. Current committee member Marie Zullo has resigned effective at the time of the annual town election in May. She has a year left on her term.

Dooley’s wife, Carolyn VanTine, has taken out papers to run for town moderator, as has Jonathan Smith, a former selectman.

Smith is one of four candidates who has already returned nomination papers with signatures, which guarantees a candidate a place on the ballot unless the candidate withdraws before the ballots are printed.

The other three candidates who have returned papers with signatures are Jim Lehan (for Board of Selectmen), Jeff Palumbo (for Planning Board), and Kathy Mullineaux (for Board of Assessors). Getting on the ballot requires taking out nomination papers and returning them to the Town Clerk’s office with the signatures of at least 41 Norfolk registered voters.

Lehan is the current chairman of the Board of Selectmen. Two other men, Scott Bugbee and Mark Flaherty, have taken out nomination papers to run for the one available three-year term on the town’s top board.

Two three-year terms are available on the town’s Planning Board. Palumbo, the current chairman of the town’s Board of Health, is running for one of them. The incumbents whose terms are expiring are Thomas Burke and current board chairman David Roche.

Current library trustee Kenneth Nelson has taken out nomination papers to run for another three-year term, as has Scott Bugbee. Bugbee has also taken out papers to run for one of the two three-year terms available on the town’s Recreation Commission. The incumbents are Tom Terpstra and David Mastro. For Board of Assessors, while current member Mullineaux has returned papers with signatures, Mike Lazdowsky has taken out papers for the available two-year term. Mullineaux, a senior clerk in the Assessors Office, was appointed

to the board last year to fill a vacancy.

Nobody has expressed interest yet in running for an available five-year term on the Norfolk Housing Authority. The seat is currently vacant.

To run for office, a candidate must pick up nomination papers in person from the Town Clerk’s officeon the ground floor of Norfolk Town Hall no later than 5 p.m. Thursday, March 11. Papers must be returned with signatures by 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 16. Annual town election is scheduled for Tuesday, May 11. (That’s a week later than usual.)
