Stony Brook Announces Its March Programs
Preschool Prowl: Tuesdays, March 2nd – 23rd, from 10:00-11:00am. Early spring is an exciting time at Stony Brook. The wetlands are bursting with new life. Join a Stony Brook naturalist on an outdoor adventure with your preschooler. Each day will have a different
nature focus and will include a story, craft or activity, and a walk on the trails. Ages 3.5 to 5. Fee: $35 member / $40 nonmember per child per 4 week session.
Tales of the Wild: Tuesdays, March 2nd – 23rd from 12:30-2:00pm. “Tales” represents a natural progression from our preschool program, since it is designed to offer young people the opportunity to discover Stony Brook on their own. This program will encourage a preschooler’s curiosity about the natural world and will introduce the observation skills that can turn every walk into a fulfillingand educational experience. Parents may remain on the Sanctuary grounds, but are not participants. Fee: $45m/$50nm per child per 4 week session
Forest Investigations: Wednesday, March 10th or Sunday, March 14th, from 10:00am-12:00pm.
Have you ever wondered what the forests in your neighborhood, local park or own backyard looked like 10, 25, 50, or 100 years ago? Every landscape holds clues that can be used to understand past land uses. All one has to do is understand how to read the clues. Join Doug Williams as he demonstrates how Stony Brook can open the keys to the past in your back yard. Fee: $7m/$10nm per person
Girls’ Day: Saturday, March 13th, from 9:30am-12:00pm. This is a day of science just for the girls! We will use our science savoir faire to make all kinds of fashionable things, from lip gloss to hair accessories. Minimum age 5. Fee: $10m/$12nm per child
On the Prowl after Dark: Sunday, March 14th from 7:00-8:30pm. This is the time of the year when many of the creatures living at Stony Brook are just starting to stir. Join us for this new moon walk. We never know what we’ll find, but you can count on some delicious hot chocolate afterwards as we share stories about what we’ve seen. Minimum age: 5. Fee: $6m/$8nm per person
Boys’ Day: Saturday, March 20th, from 9:30am-12:00pm. We’ve had a day just for girls, so here’s one just for boys! We will use our science savvy to make fizzing magic potions, wizardly good, and other mysterious mixtures. Minimum age 5. Fee: $10m/$12nm per child
Turtle Trekkers: Saturday, March 20th, from 10:30-12:00pm. Start your weekend off right with a fun and knowledgeable Stony Brook teacher on the trails learning about nature.
There will be crafts, activities and lots of laughter. So come and join the fun. This month’s theme: Blowing in the Wind! Ages 2.9 to 6 with a parent. Fee: $10m/$12nm per child
Pools in the Forest: Saturday, March 27th, from 10:00am-12:00pm. March is a busy time in New England for many amphibians as they migrate to their breeding pools. Join us as we explore a vernal pool in search of its inhabitants. We will use nets to collect and view some of the specimens, and discuss their natural history as well. Minimum age 5. Fee: $8m/$10nm per person
