Norfolk School Committee to Hold Public Hearing on Educational Leadership

Contributed to The Norfolk Boomerang by Beth Gilbert, Chair, Norfolk School Committee
The Norfolk School Committee will hold a public hearing on the future model of educational leadership for the district. The hearing will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 3 in Room 124 of Norfolk Town Hall. The Norfolk School Committee This will be a public discussion at which staff, parents, and residents will be encouraged to provide their ideas on the next steps for our district. The Norfolk School Committee and the King Philip School Committee voted during the first week of January to pursue discussions of shared services, including the positions of Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent of Schools. The Norfolk Superintendent, Mr. Don LeClerc, subsequently tendered his resignation effective July 1, 2010.

The Norfolk School Committee has several options: • We could try to work out the details of a shared services agreement with the King Philip Regional School Committee on a shorter time line than originally anticipated, so that it goes into effect on July 1, 2010. • We could seek an interim Superintendent for the Norfolk elementary district so that we have time for more exploration of the King Philip option, with the goal of executing a shared services agreement to begin July 1, 2011. That was the original time line envisioned by the Shared Services Committee.

• We could opt to conduct a search for a new Norfolk elementary district superintendent for a full contract term of three years or more, in a model similar to our current educational leadership structure. • We could develop some combination of these options, or something substantially new.
