Stony Brook Announces February Programs Get outside and enjoy Nature! Join us for these programs: Preschool Prowl: Tuesdays, February 2nd – 23rd 10:00-11:00am. Winter is spectacular at Stony Brook. The air is crisp and the colors are dramatic against the winter snows. Join a Stony Brook naturalist on an outdoor adventure with your preschooler. Each day will have a different nature focus and will include a story, craft or activity, and a walk on the trails. Ages 3.5 to 5. Fee: $35 member/$40 nonmember per child per 4 week session. Tales of the Wild: Tuesdays, February 2nd – 23rd 12:30-2:00pm. “Tales” represents a natural progression from our preschool program, since it is designed to offer young people the opportunity to discover Stony Brook on their own. This program will encourage a preschooler’s curiosity about the natural world and will introduce the observation skills that can turn every walk into a fulfilling and educational experience. Parents may remain on the Sanctuary grounds, but are not participants. Fee: $45m/$50nm per child per 4 week session Papermaking for Valentines: Saturday, February 6th 10:00am-1:00pm. Yes, you get to make your own paper! We will use recycled papers to create our own unique homemade valentines. We will also have a variety of materials available for decorating them. Minimum age 6. Fee: $10m/$12nm per person February Vacation Week: Tuesday-Friday, February 16th – 19th 9:00am-3:30pm. Vacations don’t have to be far from home to be fun. Fee: $40m/$47nm Turtle Trekkers: Saturday, February 20th 10:30 am-12:00pm. Start your weekend off right with a fun and knowledgeable Stony Brook teacher on the trails learning about nature. Fee: $10m/$12nm per child Brunch with the Eagles: Sunday, February 21st 8:00am-4:00pm. Bald eagles can often be found flying over open water in search of food during the wintertime. One of the best places to find them is along the Connecticut River. Join us for this popular yearly excursion. Lunch is included. Fee: $70m/$80nm per person Young Naturalists’ Club: Wednesday, February 24th 4:00-5:30pm. If your teenager loves Nature, is curious about plant and animal species, enjoys exploring the outdoors, or maybe even thinks of becoming a naturalist later on in life, sign him or her up for this outstanding opportunity to work with Jack Lash, former chief ecologist for DCR. We will get started in this organizational meeting, and then find a convenient time to meet thereafter. Fee: FREE Winter Tree ID Workshop: Sunday, February 28th 1:00-4:00pm. Learning how to identify local trees and shrubs in the winter seems daunting, but with a few keys and a little practice, you can become an expert. You’ll be surprised to see what is right there in your own back yard. Fee: $15m/$20nm per person On the Prowl after Dark: Sunday, February 28th 6:00-7:30pm. This is the time of the year when many of the creatures living at Stony Brook are just starting to stir. Join us for this full moon walk. We never know what we’ll find, but you can count on some delicious hot chocolate afterwards as we share stories about what we’ve seen.
