Monday’s Storm Keeps Norfolk Fire Department Busy

The Norfolk Fire Department received a high number of calls for service on Monday, January 25, many of which were related to the big storm that day:

Police and DPW also responded to this Main Street location near the Walpole town line. 8:59 a.m.: Pondville Corrections, Industries Way. Fire in the gym confinedto a heater. Fire was extinguished by Department of Correction staff using a fireextinguisher, prior to the arrival of the Fire De­partment. Firefighters checked the building for exten­sion and attended to isolating power to the heater. En­gine 2 and Squad 1 responded with four members and Chief Bushnell.

Road opened, DPW responded for clean up, Police closed road for safety.

3:30 p.m.: Wires reported down on Lawrence Street, Engine 2 responded, low hanging wires found, utility company notified 3:41 p.m.: Mirror Lake, tree blocking the road, En­gine 2 responded with Police. Road cleared, DPW ad­vised

3:45 p.m.: While responding to Mirror Lake, Car 1 found Union Street closed by fallen tree. Passing mo­torist, Police and DPW cleared road for traffic 3:49 p.m.: Reported utility pole burning on Priscilla Avenue. A full recall of off-duty career and call staff was transmitted. Squad 1 responded

4:12 p.m.: Fire alarm received from 206 Main Street, Car 1 and Engine 1 responded, caused by power out­age 4:16 p.m.: Fire alarm received from the DPW, Engine 1 responded, caused by power outage 4:18 p.m.: Fire alarm received from 194 Main Street, Engine 1 responded, caused by power outage 4:25 p.m.: Tree down with wires burning on Ware Drive, Engine 2 responded, utility company notified. 4:45 p.m.: Tree reported down on Union Street, En­gine 1 responded, unfounded. 5 p.m.: Wyllie Road, Rescue 1 responded for a well being check, no problem found.

5:10 p.m.: Engine 2 responded to Mill River Road for a carbon monoxide detector activation, no apparent problems noted. 5:12 p.m.: Engine 1 responded to a fire alarm on Montauk Avenue, found to be carbon monoxide detec­tor needing a battery. Found a slight gas odor, utility company advised to respond.

5:51 p.m.: Priscilla Avenue, utility pole burning, En­gine 2 responded and stood by for utility company.

6:21 p.m.: Ware Drive, wires down, Engine 2 re­sponded, utility company notified.

6:53 p.m.: Geneva Avenue medical emergency, Res­cue 1 responded with Engine 1.
