Route 1 Watch
As expected, the New England Patriots have at least one more home game, this weekend.
The 3-seed Patriots are scheduled to host the 6-seed Baltimore Ravens at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, after stumbling their way to a 34-27 loss to the Houston Texans last Sunday.
The Patriots apparently weren’t much interested in winning the game, as quarterback Tom Brady shuttled in and out of it and didn’t come back for what could have been a game-tying drive at the end.
But with the 10-6 finish, the Patriots still ended up with the 3 seed, which is as high as they could have gone.
It also looks like a first-round playoff victory is about as high as the Patriots can go. They were looking shaky before receiver Wes Welker got hurt last Sunday with a season-ending knee injury. But without him, the Patriots can scare few teams with their passing, and they have little running to speak of. Defenses should be able to double-team Randy Moss, leaving the passing game in the hands of rookie receiver Julian Edelman.
The package may be enough to get by the Ravens — and that’s hardly a guarantee — but it’s hard to see scoring enough points to get past the 13-3 San Diego Chargers (and 2 seed) at San Diego on Sunday, January 17. And lest we forget, the Patriots’ defense is middle-of-the-road at best.
If the Patriots somehow manage to beat both the Ravens and the Chargers, then they’d probably end up going to Indianapolis to play the Indianapolis Colts (14-2 and the 1 seed).
But if the winner of the Cincinnati Bengals-New York Jets game this weekend somehow manages to beat the Colts next weekend and the Patriots win their first two playoff games, then the Patriots would host the American Football Conference championship the fourth weekend of January, on Sunday, January 24.
So what it means for Route 1 drivers: One more Patriots game in Foxborough for sure, scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday, January 10. And then a slim chance of another Patriots home game in another two weeks.
The first-round playoff matchup with the wildcard Ravens is listed below, in bold because it’s a home game and for trafficplanning purposes:
